Enemy of the State (1998)

ENEMY OF THE STATE is surprisingly tedious. The script could be
smarter and the whole thing leaner, but the chase sequences are all
aces. Will Smith is effective, if largely unmemorable. Jon Voight
(ham-free) doesn't add much as the villain, but a shrewdly cast Gene
Hackman is great fun. Too bad he doesn't appear until the 60-minute
mark. Oh, and stay awake for the finale, which is grand. Tony
Scott (CRIMSON TIDE) directs. The likes of Lisa Bonet, Jake Busey,
Jason Lee, and Tom Sizemore pepper the supporting case. (Rated "R"/
128 min.)
