The Empire Strikes Back: Special Edition (1980/1997)

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is a bit boring, but, to be fair, so is
STAR WARS. This time, it's an emphasis on emotion and character
development that doesn't quite satisfy. Despite better acting,
considerably higher production values, and, in this special
edition, improved sound and special effects, one sequence sticks
out like a sore thumb. And that's Luke's meeting with Yoda.
Tough to take seriously: the sound-stage swamp, a grammatically
challenged Muppet, the convenience of how easily the Jedi master
is found, and all this talk of Luke's hatred. Just who or what
is Luke Skywalker angry at? The Empire, for killing his aunt
and uncle? Darth Vader, for killing Ben?? Show me the moaning.
(Rated "PG"/127 min.)
