RALEIGH - Aftermath of hotel fire at 3520 Maitland Drive. Dispatch reporting multiple callers and people trapped. Incoming units reported smoke visible from the distance. EMS 2 arrived and confirmed a working fire. Engine 12 found heavy fire visible from a second-floor room in the front of a three-story wood-frame structure with 115 units and 34,848 square-feet. Built 1987. Raleigh Inn. Fire found in two rooms on second floor, with extension to the third floor. Crews quickly attacked the fire, beginning with transitional attack. Ladder 2 performed primary search of third floor and rescued five people, who were transported with minor injuries (three adults and two children with smoke inhalation). Fire quickly contained. Eight-seven people evacuated. Two CAT busses special-called for temporary shelter. Haz-mat unit requested, due to report of possible explosion due to meth lab in a room. This report was false. Dispatched 3:39 p.m. Controlled at 4:16 p.m. Cause determined as accidental due to improperly discarded smoking material. Fire started on mattress in Room 217. Six units rendered uninhabitable. Three damaged by fire. Fifty-five people displaced.
