05/15/08 72 W - + 13 - 9 Charleston Report

Copies of the the City of Charleston Post Incident Assessment and Enhancement Review Team Phase II Report are circulating, and can be found at charleston.net, sconfire.com, and firehouse.com, among other sites. The report numbers 272 pages and includes time lines, transcripts, unit summaries, and profiles of the fallen firefighters. There's commentary over at firefighterhourly.com, and even trivia from Dave Statter, regarding the FFH blogger and the report.

Read it tonight…...wow.

Got about a third through the report last night.

What was new info to me (an is relative to ALL fire departments), is the amount of un-permitted construction that took place at the SSS. It was non-code compliant, obstructed existing exits, and was constructed of sub-standard materials. The way the additions were constructed actually connected all of the structures together, and the resulting size would have required an automatic sprinkler system. Add to this the fact that non-authorized operations and storage were taking place at the facility. Then fill the structure with highly flammable furniture. Bad place to fight a fire.

Pay attention when doing your pre-plans!

Holy disaster-waiting-to-happen, Batman!

Read it. Reading it again.

This is anywhere, USA.

Like JH said, pay attention doign you pre-plans. Pay attention when you are riding around. And pay attention during those EMS calls.
