01/21/09 78 W, 1 I - + 9 - 9 2009 Cadillac Presidential Limo

Speaking of the inauguration, below is the big man's new ride, a tough-looking 2009 Cadillac. The press release is mum on security features, but the Caddy in Chief includes LED spotlights to illuminate the front-fender flags at night. Read and see more. On the subject of Capitol rides, Popular Mechanics has a nifty article on the top presidential limos of all time. Read that article. Or consult Wikipedia on the subject of presidential state cars.

History Channel the other night had a show called “Presidential Movers” about the Planes, Helicopters, and Limos. Pretty interesting stuff. Guess I’m too young to remember that both the Army and Marines used to fly helicopters for the President, then that job was turned over solely to the Marines. I’m trying to remember that date, I’ll see if I can locate it.

Here it is, courtesy of Wikipedia: “Prior to 1976, responsibility for helicopter transportation of the President was divided between the Army and the U.S. Marine Corps until the Marine Corps was given the sole responsibility of transporting the President by helicopter.”

I bet that thing gets some great gas mileage…..

It was originally reported as being a hybrid by both CNN and the NY Daily News. Not sure if that is true or not….

It’s not a hybrid. Some news outlets were calling it that not because of the fuel it uses, but because it is a hybrid of a car and tank (though they did not make this differentiation clear!).

I read that it actually has a GM Duramax diesel engine.

As long as it’s not a Ford 6.0L diesel!
