07/07/09 194 W, 2 I - + 7 - 11 Raleigh Ladder Histories

Today is Ladder Day, when the city's ladder companies (and other units) are renumbered in sequential fashion. Ladder 1 through Ladder 8. Here's the historical perspective on the changes. Note that ladder companies were called truck companies until August 21, 2006. See these company histories  for more information. Corrections welcome.

I wish they were still called trucks. Just a preference I guess.

Yeah, I think “Truck” has more “mmmpphhhh” to it…it’s still considered “truck work”.
Silver - 07/07/09 - 17:58

Correction Mike,

Ladder 2 is housed at Station 11 not Station 2.

Let me pose this question, while it’s a minor one; are fire stations still “numbered” by the engine company in that house? Or, shall we change the term to “Engine 4 and Ladder 1’s quarters”? Or, turn to street names? “Northway Court Firehouse” perhaps…
Silver - 07/07/09 - 21:44

With the number changes you really can’t really refer to the firehouse the way it was such as fire station 4, because it houses two pieces of equipment with different numbers now. The most appropriate way to refer to the house would be like you said the quarters of Engine 4, Ladder 1. Street names would also work, but the first seems a little better. You could also use the bourough or community name the house serves for the firehouse designation. Example Briar Creek firehouse.

Looks like LADDER 4 is going to be out of service for some time since they just had a roll over accident this morning.
JM - 07/10/09 - 15:22

While the cab looked pretty much intact, the tiller driver’s area looked pretty messed up, wral says 2 to the hospital hopefully nothing too serious. But yes hate to be the shop guys with both the old l-22 and l-11 already down and now this. Someone is going to be riding around on an old ladder for awhile (or longer if this delays the rig at 24 getting replaced).
JLH - 07/10/09 - 16:03

Ladders can be replaced, people canít. Called home and heard the guys got banged up a little bit. I wish them a speedy recovery and I am glad to hear nobody got seriously injured.
