Notes on the methodology. Same was created using SurveyMonkey, and with a month’s service purchased. The free version required four separate forms, and was too unwieldy. Plus the results couldn’t be cross-compared. The first seven respondents used the four forms; everyone else got the big, single form.

The 104 people who responded were drawn from (a.) blog readers, (b.) Facebook readers, or (c.) perhaps friends of the first two, with the survey forwarded to same. Do the results reflect an accurate cross-section of the local fire service? Perhaps.

They were mostly white males, over 30 years of age, with 10 or more years of firefighting experience, with college course experience or higher, and no military experience. Half were two-hatters, both career and volunteer.

Maybe we’ll pontificate on race, gender, experience, and education at a later point. Lots to think about!
