05/24/10 75 W, 1 I - + 7 - 8 Falls Lake Training Exercise Photos

Firefighter Mark Peterson shares photos he posted from the May 8 training exercise at Falls Lake, where Falls, Bay Leaf, and Stony Hill fire departments responded to a simulated collision of two boats on the lake, location not clear, with six people injured, and one ejection. Good shots, Mark. Thanks for sharing. How many lake incidents do area departments respond to, do you suppose? Anyone have stats?

This was a great training event for us. Thanks to Falls FD Capt. Nick Rhodes for coordinating the activity. Stony Hill, Falls, and Bay Leaf have a great working relationship and typically respond simultaneously to the majority of the “lake based” emergencies. The Falls Lake incidents range from boating accidents, to drownings, to boat fires, to even submerged vehicles. However, it is rare that a person is actually “rescued” from the water (“Bay Watch” style). Usually there are other boaters close by who will remove any injured person from the water. Depending on the patient’s apparent condition, the good Samaritan may transport them to the nearest ramp. Otherwise, we will rendezvous with them at the accident location. Falls Lake is also patrolled by N.C. Wildlife and the Wake Co. Sheriff’s department and dive services are typically provided by the Youngsville Rescue Squad Dive Team. Incidents occur on a varied basis and varied scope, but we’ll typically see anywhere from 1-2 dispatches every 2 weeks in the summer.

And with a reported boat explosion in Durham County this afternoon, I guess the season begins! Four to eight injured, apparently during fueling.
