10/31/10 40 W, 1 I - + 7 - 9 Before Rushing To The Hospital

Take a moment to get online and check the wait at the emergency room! As seen this weekend in Timonium, Maryland. That's a town just north of Baltimore.

They even have an iphone & android app that apparently keeps track of waiting times. Granted, if you attend the ER so often that you need an app to keep you updated you might be wandering into Tim “The Toolman” Taylor/Home Improvement territory and maybe need to rethink your decision making skills :-)

ER over crowding is a problem, although it is a problem that has been years in the making. Some folks don’t have a doctor, so they go to the ED. Other folks have a doctor, and when they call their doctor, he says “go to the emergency room”, rather than deal with the problem. And of course, some of those doctors will say “and call 9-1-1 so you will get seen quicker”.

But then there are the folks who are in the ED time and time again, so often that the ED staff knows them. Sometimes they are nursing home residents, but other times they are just ‘frequent flyers’, who go to the ED for every sniffle, ache, or pain, or just go to hang out in the waiting room and watch TV.

And those folks are not going to read one of these billboards or the one that says that EMS is not a taxi.

Oh yeah, the website is the hospital’s website. They say they have cut the wait time to see a ‘healthcare professional’ to just 14 minutes. That’s the ‘initial’ triage nurse. That does not include the time spent waiting to see the nurse to check your vitals and start your chart, then the doctor, then x-rays and labs, then the doctor again….
