01/16/11 107 W, 1 I - + 4 - 1 Raleigh Fire Hydrants Again

First, see our prior posting on this subject. How many different fire hydrants can be found in Raleigh? That was our original question. Readers helped identify models and a couple dropped private notes about others. We even blogged about map showing all city hydrants in 1903, when the water system was 15 years old.

Upon further explorations, here's a second-attempt overview. Working from FireHydrant.org as a reference source--- as well as what's stamped on the damned things-- we've found American Darling, American Foundry, Clow, Kennedy, Mueller, Waterous, and Wood around town. See below. What's wrong, what's missing? Click once or twice to enlarge:

If I’m not mistaken, the one labeled American Darling 2001 is a Clow.

Thanks JJ. Yes, the AD 2001 and the AD 1997 are both Clow models. And, to complete the inaccuracies on the American Darling section, the AD 1996 is a Mueller.

Montage updated with two American Darling hydrants, seen in the prior posting.

I think some people refer to the Woods hydrants as Matthews hydrants and vice versa. And rightfully so, since the two merged at some point if not mistaken. I also think they were later bought out by Kennedy.

And UL, which is exemplified in that old-looking Kennedy with the “high top.”. The names Matthews and Wood are also stamped on the thing.

From what I have read, this type of plug was produced right after Kennedy took over Matthews-Wood.

Just what I need, another research rabbit to chase down a hole…

No, don’t know, don’t know.

Welcome to the hydrant spotters secret club.

The mystery hydrant is American AVK Company.
