01/23/11 81 W, 1 I - + 3 - 3 The Other Old Station 4

And here's what the other old Station 4 is looking likes these days. The address is 2913 Wake Forest Road and the station operated from 1963 to 1993. Also housed a Battalion Chief (then called District Chief) and a tanker, for a number of years. Commercial property and presently for lease! You could occupy your very own former Raleigh fire station! Formerly housed a software company, which I believe has been the owner since the station closed. Click to enlarge:

What’s the cost to lease something like this?

boy what a screw up it was to let that one go
oops - 01/23/11 - 18:06

maybe raleigh can lease this building and find a use for it. perhaps e-13 could move in or wake county could use it as an ambulance base.
anoymous - 01/23/11 - 18:51

ISO stated the city needs a station in that vicinity.
RescueRanger - 01/23/11 - 18:55

Station 4 was relocated during the administration of Chief Pickard. That same year, he proposed to City Council the consolidation of Station 1 and Station 3, and Station 5 and Station 6. His proposal cited the ability to trim 24 positions, and save up to $800,000, but benefits. Citizens protested, including one M. Legeros, who had a weighty letter published in the News & Observer. The proposal was eventually scrapped.

Lease it and put a heavy rescue in itt….perfect spot.
Silver - 01/23/11 - 20:26

A heavy Rescue Company to respond to structure calls, extrications and technical rescues plus put an engine company in it and number it station 13. if they still need two Engines downtown then they can put A E30 downtown, assuming that E29 still goes to leesville rd. then in a few years when station 30 is built, move E30 to station 30 and replace the second engine downtown with a E31. then with the new heavy rescue, perhaps the city could put more ladders in service. that would be cool for raleigh to have about a dozen ladder trucks.

Hey Charlie, I know we’re just throwing our dream world FD fantasies around, so here’s mine; no need for a double engine house downtown, ridiculous mindset. Sorry Brothers, but 2500 calls a year isn’t busy. Another firehouse inner city (old #4)? Definitely. A two engine firehouse? Silly…just my opinion.

Two heavy rescues to split the city (when Rescue 2 comes up for replacement, just phase it out and add a third person to the other two Rescues, then budget for Captains) because we’re pretty darn spread out. Put one at 9’s, and the other maybe at Central Firehouse and staff them with a boss and three. Twelve Ladder Companies would be awesome!! Beef up the fire responses to 3, 2 and a Rescue and rock on!! Oh well, if we could just wave a magic wand and get the cash to appear….
Silver - 01/24/11 - 00:46

I can assure you we’ll never see a 4-man rescue company. Rescues are just not needed in this city and don’t carry any weight with ISO. I ride a rescue and am still shocked we haven’t been put out of service due to budget constraints. Think about it, what does a rescue really do that a ladder company can’t besides provide 2 more bodies on the scene?
RescueRanger - 01/24/11 - 12:09

@RR; I know, just sharing dreams. I wouldn’t say “never” though. I keep hearing talk about one, six member heavy rescue. It was brought up during the last Fire Officer class at KTC by the top dog.
Silver - 01/24/11 - 12:17

Silver I like the way you think, and always look forward to seeing your thoughts on here…..
jkay - 01/24/11 - 15:53

LOL. Silver, is your second screen name jkay? :)
gen3fire - 01/24/11 - 16:43

KC, LOL!!!
KP - 01/24/11 - 21:37

Thanks Jimbo!!

Nice KC, real nice. You know I don’t get off on others digging my perspective on things. Some agree, some don’t. No big deal!!

Just think how much more efficient we could operate though, if a 4-member Ladder and a 4-member Rescue would be operating at a job. Love ya’ KC….
