Based on the open space at the bottom of the Maltese Cross, I am guess this was a generic patch for county departments, and perhaps they stitched their department number at bottom?

I have never seen that patch before in the few fire stations in the county i have visited. Pretty interesting!

From what I remember when I worked in Cumberland Co. It was a generalized patch that all county departments had. The open space at the bottom of the maltese cross was to allow the station number to be stitched into it. As the individual departments grew, they began to design thier own patches. Was more for having uniformity across the county as they did with basic SOP/SOG, truck specs, etc…

I went to Chief Brunacini’s seminar in Fayetteville in the 80s and a lot of the folks there had this patch.
