This is a tough crowd to stump. We've tried roads, streets, signs, and buildings, plus innumerable fire and emergency vehicles. Let's see if this piece of geography can puzzle folks for more than thirty minutes. Where's this place? 'Taint far, neither. Click to enlarge:

Wild guess, Wild Cat Hollow in the Rolesville/Wake Forest area?

Is that the mine on Lead Mine rd.?

Not enough clearance to be a mine shaft. That opening’s about three or four feet high. Inside the thing, there’s room for standing, but that’s 10 or 15 feet inside, if memory serves.

I wasn’t sure if it was the graphite mine. I remember reading an article that the land owner was doing some landscaping work and uncovered the entrance to one of the mines. The article stated the mine entrances had been blasted shut but the hole allowed enough visibility to see the original inside.

There was a News & Observer article, say, 10 years ago about that homeowner, who had gone into the mine and pumped water out. If you explorer the hills on the west side of Lead Mine, north of Lynn Road (named after the Lynn family, of whom we know a few members!), you’ll find graphite boulders. That’s the mineral used to make pencil “lead.” Best explored in the winter, when the leaves and trees are minimal. Somewhere above that hill is a mine entrance, on someone’s property. No idea if it’s been re-sealed.

Western NC mine exploring, found by Google, http://www.wncrocks.com/resources/mineex... There’s a technical rescue call waiting to happen!

We never did answer this one. It’s off Airline Road, on private property a couple lots north (I believe) of the road, along a creek bed. Came to mind after someone sent me this link, http://tritrogs.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_... Same place?

Compared photos. Yup, same place.
