04/20/11 114 W, 1 I - + 0 - 1 Throwing Ladders / Two Alarms on Walden Pond Drive


Reader photo from today's two-alarm fire in Raleigh. Ladder 2 arriving at 4740 Walden Pond Drive with heavy fire showing from the front of a two-story, wood-frame apartment building with 1,865 square-feet. Built 1974. Crews forced entry and found heavy fire in the kitchen area. Ladder 2 was deployed to the roof, for access for ventilation. Dispatched 1:50 p.m. Controlled 2:27 p.m. Two units rendered uninhabitable. No injuries. Cause determined as accidental. Units on scene included E11, E9, E19, L2, R3, B1, E27, A1, C10, C20, E16, E22, E4, L5, B2, B4, C2, C3, EMS 12, EMS 2, EMS 6, D_, D4, M93, T1. No offense taken 911, but this is a fine example of the “outside work” required at a working fire. These pics will end up in a PowerPoint, as an example of “what TO do”. While priority goes to the search and confinement/ extinguishment, it’s about making the building safe for us too.

L-2 riding 4 arrived on scene first marked MWF (fire was not major but needed more manpower than just regular assingment) split inside out side teams, E-11 Fire attack group 1 1/2, L-2 search group forced door for attack group,then conducted a primary in Fire Apt,L-2 Vent group preformed horz vent on main window in the pic to right set truck up and made there way to roof, R-3 riding 3 arrived radioed we would be assisting vent group did a face to face with vent group vent. Vent group started vertical venting and R-3 began baggin ladders to windows and roof on A and C Side no window on B and D sides, R-3 VES division 3 due to L-2 irons stating they couldn’t get to top floor keeping one member at bottom of ladder while R-3 irons and R-3 Officer went into separte Apts on Division 3 nothing found existed div 3, R-3 Irons forced door thru the lock using rex tool w/morris mod on the D exposure apartment R-3 search all 3 divisions nothing found, L-5 picked up the secondary search,E-9 advance a second 1 1/2 to assist with Attack group,RIT staged tools in Division A. Search Primary and Secondary all clear,L-2 R-3 remvoved smoke w electric fans in all Condos,all crews went to rehab ,then overhaul done, returned to servce. Great job to all! Great example of Coordinated fire attack. 3 Ladders including aerial ladder to Roof Divison, 6 to windows.Ladders used to VES, and there if @#it hit the fan.1 turtle and 1 lizard saved, One firefighter transported to ER firefighter is doing fine last i heard. “ Vote for 4 on the Rescue!” Stay safe Duck Out
