The Cary Citizen recently published an article about the green building principles planned for Fire Station 8 and will result in what the article calls the first green firehouse in the United States. Environmentally friendly features will include low-emitting buidling materials, enhanced ventilation systems, extensive day lighting, and solar cells producing power for resale. The two-story (!) station will be built at 408 Mills Park Drive. Construction is scheduled to start this fall, and with a 14 month time to completion. Read the story.

First green firehouse in United States? That can’t be right, can it? Do they mean a type of custom-built green firehouse, that’s all-new?

Beautiful design regardless, love the traditional doors.

Two stories…so that means there will be a fire pole, right?

There will probably be some kind of administrative space in the second story, or accounting for it’s existence. Just a guess. I don’t know much about CFD and if they need dedicated space for that, etc…

Here’s a project page from the town about the facility: http://www.townofcary.org/Departments/Fi..

The project includes a 14,860 square foot, two-story building and site improvements:

* 13,700 square foot fire station with 3 apparatus bays, office space and living quarters.
* 1,160 square foot police satellite office will be co-located within the building.
* 350 foot communications tower will be co-located on the site.

Any CFD guys know if a County/Cary medic unit will be housed here as well?

As of the last design I saw:

There will be 2 poles. One near the front stairs and one near the back stairs.

2nd floor is dorm space, workout room and locker room/bathroom.

1st floor is a multi-purpose/conference/training room in the front corner that can be used by both FD and PD members. There is a dedicated area for CPD to have interview rooms, and office space, with a side door for their use into their area. 1st floor will also house office space for FD personnel, a dayroom, kitchen and a watch room at the front of the building next to an enclosed foyer.

Also the building will be constructed using ‘green’ principles but not obtain a LEED certification as that adds extra cost.

As for the EMS unit, that is in the hands of the deployment committee of Wake EMS.

The bi-fold doors while costing more initially open faster and have less maintenance costs over the life of the door.
