06/26/11 53 W, 1 I - + 1 - 4 Video of Partial Roof Collapse

A reader has suggested this close-call video as a topic for discussion. As shot by Carl Kern and posted to Firehouse.com, it captures the partial roof collapse during ventilation at a residential structure fire on June 11 in Washington Township, PA. Watch the video. Discuss as desired.

Saw this video last week; KNOW YOUR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION! Modular homes/ mobile homes are SUPER- DUPER lightweight construction.

Wow, so much can be said about this video. Why is it that something is burning in front of you and you have no desire to don an airpack? The majority of the spectators (I wouldn’t call them firefighters)are walking around the yard clueless and not even ready to fight fire. That works great when your guy falls all the way through and you aren’t even prepared to go get him! If you are going to vent a roof (which this is not one to be on) use a real saw! The job could have been done faster with hand tools… I halfway expected to see an extension cord plugged into that little thing! Get in there and pull some ceiling if you want this fire to go out. It’s a mobile home and there is not exactly going to be all kinds of cut up voids to find- it’s going to be a simple attic space throughout… Maybe they were looking for the attic access- I love hearing that one on the radio as you let the house burn down around you…
