08/18/12 99 W, 1 I - + 3 - 4 How Important is Good Writing?

Saw this this week in the New York Times, one of their "Room for Debate" features on the topic "Is Our Children Learning Enough Grammar to Get Hired?" Five columnists offer their opinions on writing skills and hire-ability. How does this impact people who work in emergency services? Probably or certainly as a sliding scale. Maybe minimal at the entry-level, but obviously important as you, um, climb the ladder. Discuss as desired. And here's a special stock photo, created just for this posting...

How well you write demonstrates your mastery of the English language. It is a measure of who you are and, when it gets right down to it, how smart you really are. Yes, there are people who do not write well who are very intelligent. The sad part is, that is not how they come across. Especially to potential employers. Additionally, in this day of a litigation-hungry society, always seeking the “quick pay-off”, poor writers are easy prey for mediocre lawyers. And it is simple things, like your/you’re, then/than, to/two/too, etc.

Dale, there’s an interesting irony here. The Internet age affords the opportunity for much more practice at writing (and typing) skills. E-mail and social media make excellent proving grounds. You just have to pay attention. Becoming even slightly self-aware of how you’re expressing yourself (and how well the other person is comprehending you) results in reaped rewards.
