12/28/12 121 W, 1 I - + 3 - 5 Open House at Old Station 4 on Wake Forest Road on Saturday, Dec. 29

Last-minute notice on this one. Oak City Coffee Roasters is holding an open house at old Station 4 on Wake Forest Road on Saturday, December 29. The event is from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. They've been using the building this year as a location for roasting their coffee. The public is invited, and no invitation is required.

This Goodnight Raleigh posting tells more, and has a picture of the roasting operation inside the former fire station. As we noted in a recent posting, the building is apparently destined for demolition. A mattress store is planned for the location. The fire station operated from 1963 to 1993, before relocating to Northway Court.

I stopped by ~7pm and looked around one final time. The place is in amazing condition. I’m sure it was an easy upkeep as soon as the firefighters left. Really goes to show how rough we are on our stuff whether it’s the station, apparatus, or equipment. And to think we take care of our stuff simply because we clean it everyday. Tsk,tsk, tsk. I am actually wanting to contact the owners of the facility to inquire about the kitchen cabinets. They seem to be in fantastic shape. I’d hate for them and a few other items to simply be demolished. Seems like a waste. The cabinets at my current station are in horrible shape and we’ve already been told there is no money for fixing them. I’d love to remove the cabinets from old #4 and install them in my current station.
