Fire on the Mall!

Thirty-five years after the Mangel's Building burned on July 7, 1981

One of the largest fires in the modern history of downtown Raleigh started on the second floor of the old Mangel's department store building at 120 Fayetteville Street Mall just before 9:00 a.m. on July 7, 1981. The rapidly spreading fire soon raged out of control for three hours in a building that was divided into two main businesses and ten smaller businesses. An exterior wall collapsed two hours into the incident, damaging three cars in an adjacent parking lot. Eleven firefighters were treated at the hospital for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze, including 21 recruits. Every fire station in the city sent crews to the scene. Total damage was $229,750 for the building and $188,250 for the contents.
