Major Milestones

  • 1857 - Town founded
  • 1860 - Town incorporated
  • 1895, circa - First pumping engine, first Fire Chief, water supplied by fire wells
  • 1906 - MHFD chartered, fire station established in City Hall on Evans Street
  • 1910 - Water system including fire hydrants completed, first fire horse and hose wagon.
  • 1915 - Second fire company organized.
  • 1920 - First motor apparatus (hose truck).
  • 1922 - Gamewell fire alarm system installed.
  • 1926 - New fire station at new City Hall, first motor pumping engine, first full-time driver.
  • 1928, circa - First ladder truck (quad).
  • 1956 - West End Fire Station opened, later Station 2. First tanker added.
  • 1972, circa - Rural fire district added, Mitchell Village/Crab Point.
  • 1975 - First full-time Fire Chief.
  • 2000 - Morehead City EMS merges with fire department.
  • 2001 - Station 1 relocated to Bridges Street.
  • 2003 - First fire boat.
  • 2007 - Station 3 opened on Highway 70 west.
  • 2012 - Station 2 relocated to Arendell Street.
  • 2014 - Wildwood FD merges with city fire department.
