Metro (1996)

METRO is mangled Murphy. Playing San Francisco's top hostage nego-
tiator, Eddie is almost the exact opposite of his NUTTY PROFESSOR
persona. Here, he's unfunny, dramatically dull, and possessing
only a trace of his trademark charisma. The first half is passable
as a police procedural. Watching the S.F.P.D. S.W.A.T. team in
action is intriguing, I guess, even if the concerned characters are
not. Around the hour mark, though, METRO takes an absurd turn for
the worse. Logic is abandoned in favor of B.L.D. (Bigger, Louder,
and Dumber). If you think the runaway trolley-car sequence is far-
fetched, wait till you see the movie morph into a slasher pic. And
I'm not joking. (Rated "R"/ 117 min.)
