Hard Rain (1998)

HARD RAIN is all wet. The gazillion-gallon production design is
something to see, I suppose, until your eyes get tired of trying to
see through the murk. (Most of the action takes place outdoors, at
night, and in the rain.) The extending opening shot, which incor-
porates the Paramount logo, is pretty cool, too. (The camera pulls
back from the mountain and tracks over a dam, across a flood plain,
and into a small town.) The rest is just another silly action pic,
albeit one scripted by SPEED scribe Graham Yost. My favorite bon-
ers: Christian Slater trying to outrun (outwade?) boaters instead
of (gasp!) hiding underwater; ready-to-explode propane tanks (made
by ACME?) that appear out of nowhere; and a bad guy felled by an
airborne outboard motor, of all things. With Morgan Freeman, Min-
nie Driver, and, for no apparent reason other than maybe first-time
helmer Mikael Salomon is a Mary Tyler Moore fan, Ed Asner and Betty
White. So where's Gavin MacLeod? (Rated "R"/97 min.)
