02/20/08 49 W - + 13 - 9 Clayton Fire Department Open House on Sunday at Station 2

The Clayton Fire Department is conducting an open house at Station 2 on Sunday, February 24, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. They recently completed an addition to the facility, adding living quarters for a full-time crew. The station is located at 800 Highway 42 East.

Clayton has started 24/7 staffing at station two and will remain using day timers for station one and paid per call members at night time for station one.

What’s their staffing levels and what do they staff (enigne, ladder)?
Silver - 02/20/08 - 14:57

Prior to the addition of full time staffing, Clayton was staffed with full time day crews at both station one and station two. The Town has approved to place a 24/7 crew at station two and continue daytime staffing at station one. Clayton is now dispatched by department(station now), which the unit that they typically take to the call, will go. Clayton does not have a ladder truck at this time. Night time hours, Clayton will continue to use their paid-on-call members with station one and the 24/7 crew at station two will wait for two more members to respond with a truck from that station.

Just so I understand; when the buzzer hits in the middle of the night for Station 2, that full time crew still has to sit and wait for 2 vollies?

The Town of Clayton Fire Department is a combination department with full time and part time on call employees. During the restructuring of the department in the last ten years our staff has been recognized by the Town as employees not volunteers. Our recruitment and promotion process is the same for everyone. All part time on call staff receive hourly pay for incident response, training, scheduled equipment inspections/check-offs and special called duty shifts.

Effective 2/16/08 we began shifts at Station 2 with a Fire Equipment Operator (Driver) and a Firefighter. During daytime hours they are assisted with another Firefighter. After hours, weekends and holidays they are depending on the part time on call staff to respond to staff both engines with a full crew per our SOG. We have reprogrammed both Minitor and Alpha pagers for separate tones for station response. Major incidents will get a full response.

Our Manager and Town Council are committed to working with and helping all of our Town Departments. We have been allowed to increase our staffing, replace/add equipment and apparatus. It is up to the department as dedicated firefighters to respond to the calls for service by getting the required apparatus out of the station and safely to the incident.

I would like to personally invite everyone to come out and visit us at Station 2 on Sunday to ask questions about our department. Our recruitment process is in May and November. If you live in the area or would be interested in part time day time work contact our Training/Safety Division at 919-553-1520.

Silver- you understand correctly. I would be happy to discuss the reasoning for this with you feel free to stop by anytime.

What do you require of your part time day workers, i.e. (certs, schedule)
FF87437 - 02/20/08 - 23:41

FF87437- As stated above our recruitment and promotion process is the same for everyone. Call Chief Dean and request a time to come by so he can discuss our process. The TOC web site is being re-organized and we plan to post everything on line in the near future. We do try to give our PTOC staff priority in the daytime scheduling. Our PTOC staff are very committed to helping out during the day and after hours. Our PTOC staff are required to maintain a min. of 15% attendance to all calls. In 2007 the percentages range from approx.25% to 65% with a total of 850+ calls for service.
