11/15/09 93 W - + 13 - 15 Departments with Opportunities for College Students?

Received a question from a high-school senior and a junior firefighter who has applied to be an adult firefighter at his department. His question is about opportunities for college students in fire departments about the Triangle, and or central Piedmont. Question #1, what departments have part-time employment opportunities for night-time coverage? Question #2, what departments have residency programs that allow students to live at the station for free, and while providing night-time coverage?  Thanks for any input. Feel free to post your suggestions, or mail Mike directly. Thanks.

I believe Fayetteville FD and the community college have something worked out in their area to accomidate this

We have almost a dozen members in college, as far as an actual live-in program there is none currently, but there is also no restriction on how many nights you can stay. Also once you are off probation you are eligible for the night duty stipend of $50 a night for 3 people per night. Any questions please contact the station at 919-676-4187.

Western Wake FD has an extensive history of NCSU students being part of the department. I would venture to say that over 75% of the membership over the years have been NCSU students. Some stay around after graduation, some venture off to start a new life, but it mostly has been a great way to retain members. There is no live-in program but firefighters are allowed to stay at the station as much as they want, and after they are off of probation they are expected to pull a certain number of duty crews for a stipend. The department provides a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of school and the use of the various facilities that are available such as washer/dryer, wireless internet, etc.

Any interested member should attend a Wednesday night meeting to obtain further information or call the firehouse at 919-836-1900
