Always wondered what these impact-absorbing devices were called, that are deployed on construction vehicles on highways. Truck mounted attenuators. Here's a long video about a particular brand of the things, that shows how they work and includes some success stories. Guess they're unsuitable or maybe too expensive for fire apparatus. If they're weren't, we'd have seen them adapted already, right?

I used to work for division of a highway safety company that designed the first truck mounted attenuators (TMAs) several years ago. I sent an email to that division asking them to come up with a way to mount to a fire truck, but never got a response. I had initially thought some sort of hydraulic setup that would place the TMA on top of the truck, until needed for blocking might work, but who knows…

The unit protects work crews from errant vehicles and protects motorists from shadow vehicles. The open design and all steel construction makes routine inspection quick, reliable and simple.
