12/14/10 49 W, 1 I - + 7 - 8 Mystery History

Let's see how quickly folks can identify this one. Lee Wilson took the picture. Mike Legeros did a bit of perspective correction, since a wide lens was used. Three alarms that day. Note the news chopper in the upper-right corner. Click to enlarge:

I remember this one but cannot remember the name of the warehouse. It was on Penmarc Dr. and was a “Code 3” fire. I had the HM Team at KTC for monthly training. When we heard the dispatch, we ran outside and saw the column of smoke; then all 5 companies responded from KTC to aid at the call. It was an A-Shift day.

It was the old News and Observer warehouse.

Lucky there was not a LODD that day.

This gets me thinking about the biggest commercial and industrial structure fires of the last decade. Three three-alarmers, if I am not mistaken. Penmarc, above in 2003. Diggs Drive in 2004. Hammell Drive in 2008. I’ll compile a list later, and add the two-baggers.

Yeah Rob… I seem to remember some electrical lines down on one side – memory is foggy. ...or maybe the near miss was the two chiefs that had a heated discussion on scene. You were on E3 then (right?)

Radio tower came down and missed Ladder 8 which was in the air. All because One chief said “we are going to save this man’s records” The other chief said on the radio “I strongly suggest we get our people out right now” I know what I would do if someone said that on the radio and I had command. There was a retirement not long after that (don’t know that the fire had anything to do with it) I was on Engine 13 (Gypsy Wagon) filling in at Station 8 that day for the Haz Mat School
