Speaking of history and hydrants, here's a look at the fire suppression systems at what was called North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts back in the day. They had their own water system and elevated tank, as well as hydrants and hose. (The college was outside the city limits.) Below is an annotated Sanborn Map showing same.
