News & Observer story this morning about promotional commercials for Sunday's NHL All-Star Game and one particular image that depicts the RBC Center smack dab in the middle of downtown Raleigh. Guess it could happen in a future decade. Don't arenas require replacement every couple decades, or at least as their owners (or affiliated sports teams) advocate? Might be time to bring one downtown!

oh lord parking and traffic would be HORRIBLE!!

one of the main reasons it didn’t happen in the first place

You are right Mike, arenas are ususally rebuilt or altered after awhile. The RBC center just underwent major upgrades, including a new jumbo tron, re-built suites, new credit card machines for concession stands, just to name a few. I do know that the RBC center has reached its “half life”, in that, the building is at the peak of its potential, and will be on the downward slope. There has been talk of its replacement, with an eye on locations downtown, some of the rumored areas include land adjacent to the convention center where the outdoor theater is now, as well as the open land on South Saunders St. by the Red Roof inn. Another favorite going around, but nothing heard spoken by those that know – using Dix Campus land. But Shevais is right, parking sucks, and without the expanse of more hotels, any site other than immediately attached to downtown will require some thought. As for me, I’m not worried – I have my entry to the All Star Game already!

It would be nice if the downtown streets were actually that wide! ...arena or not!

Talk about bringing a lot to downtown. If this happened, downtown would be nuts.
