01/26/11 69 W, 1 I - + 6 - 2 Last Night's Overturned Tanker

Speaking of which, here's a picture from WRAL of the tractor-drawn tanker that overturned last night on westbound I-40 near Wade Avenue. The accident occurred just after 11:00 p.m. The truck was hauling 6,000 gallons of soybean oil. The road was closed for hours. Western Wake and Raleigh fire department units were also on scene for hours. Other coverage: News & Observer, WTVD.

Western Wake 196, 295, Raleigh E8, L3, EMS 4, D5, among units on scene. And a couple big honkin’ wreckers from Barbour’s, to right the thing after it was unloaded.

Add WWT198, RFBATT3, E14, R3, L7 (not 3), another EMS unit, DOT, and a LOT of equipment from Barbour’s (two big heavy wreckers, one medium heavy, one light wrecker, a service truck, a light tower trailer, a tandem trailer with tools/equipment, and probably one more wrecker whose driver was manpower. Oh yeah, and another tank truck from Opies into which the product was offloaded. Plus RPD, SHP/MCE. It was a big production and from what I saw, everybody worked well together. Surprised we didn’t see Mr. Blogger!

And let’s throw a BIG thanks to the volunteers that came to the station to staff E191 should we have gotten another call.

I have a couple questions, If this was only soybean oil, and there was no leak, no injuries and the overturned truck was off the roadway. Why was I-40 shut down for so long and why were there so many fire units tied up to babysit an upside-down tanker with no hazards. I understand that units could have come back out after the second tanker arrived to control a spill if that was to happen while tranfering/uprighting the trailer but to stay all night seems crazy to me.
