11/11/12 568 W, 2 I - + 1 - 4 Raleigh Fire Department Centennial History Book Nears Completion

Production is nearly complete on a commemorative book chronicling the history of the Raleigh Fire Department. The project has been one of several this year celebrating the department's 100th anniversary as a career fire department.

A group of active, retired, and former firefighters has been working on the book since February. They've been soliciting pre-orders, collecting historical materials, and designing page content. Their deadline is mid-January, and publication is planned for March.

The book won't be available in stores, however. It's a limited-edition volume that's available exclusively for pre-ordering. The 260-page, full-color, hardcover book is priced at $60.00 until December 1. The price rises to $70.00 on December 2. The deadline for all orders is January 15, 2013. Ordering information is available at www.rfd100.com.

Among the book's special features are pictures of all active and retired personnel. "We're including portraits of every retiree since the start of the city retirement system in 1949," notes department historian Mike Legeros. "We've compiled over 350 portraits, and with many unearthed through detective work."

Other sections of the book include:

Plus plenty of modern action shots. "The project team's reviewed hundreds of incident photos taken by the fire department photographers in recent years," notes Legeros. "We'll have a special section called Firefighters in Action, showcasing those shots."

Questions and Answers

Q: Is this book a "history book" or a "yearbook" or both?
A: The Centennial History Book is also a yearbook of sorts. It presents a complete portrait of the Raleigh Fire Department during its 100th anniversary year. It will contain portraits of all members, pictures of all fire stations, pictures of all station crews, and photos of recent incidents. Plus one hundred years of historical content.

Q: How many books has the fire department produced to date? Are they still available?
A: The first commemorative book was published in 1984 by Taylor Publishing Company. Another was published by the same company in 2002. Both are out of print. The fire department's 95th anniversary was celebrated with a book in 2007. It is still available from M.T. Publishing.

Q: Who is writing the Centennial History Book?
A: The book is being produced by a committee of active, retired, and former firefighters. The text history is being written by Historian Mike Legeros, who will combine, update, and expand the texts from the 1984 and 2002 commemorative books. Those histories were written by Capt. B. T. Fowler and Capt. Peter Brock, respectively.

Q: Where will the book be sold? How can we purchase copies?
A: The Centennial History Book is available for advance order only. It will not be sold in stores, nor available after publication from the publisher. The price is $60 until December 1, and $70 starting December 2. The deadline for ordering is January 15, 2013. For ordering information, visit www.rfd100.com.
