08/18/09 102 W, 1 I - + 8 - 6 Construction Nearly Finished on Apex Station 4

The Apex Fire Department web site has been posting construction photos of the town's new public safety station at 1615 E. Williams Street, and a set of shots from August show that the facility is nearly complete. From the photo captions, the facility includes seven dorm rooms, two laundry rooms, a workshop, and a nice covered patio. There's a kitchen, day room, offices, etc. The grounds also include a retention pond. Haven't seen one of those before at a fire station. The grand opening has been scheduled for September 15, notes the site.

It’s a nice looking firehouse from the outside, and should be a great site for Apex to give it better access to US-1 and the part of town on the east side of US-1. It’s been neat to watch it get built over the past several months as I drive past it daily. Congrats to the brothers and sisters of the Apex FD.

As for retention ponds there is also one behind Cary FD Station 7, there were major drainage issues that had to be dealt with on that site.

It is a very nice station. I was given a quick walk through the other day and things look great. Apex has come a long way from the 1939 building downtown. They have also done their homework for future expansion and new equipment in the future. I like the traffic lights in the bay to let the driver know the doors are up. I know that sounds crazy, but with the new ladder trucks these days with buckets as wide as the cab, the traffic lights are a nice touch of safety. I also like that the dorms are closer to the bay than the living areas. This should help with turn out times at night. Congrats to Apex FD for a very nice, and very user friendly station.
