02/01/10 155 W, 3 I - + 9 - 3 Fayetteville Street Directories

Weather's warming. Businesses are opening. Everyone's getting back to normal. For your reading pleasure, here are three excerpts from Raleigh city directories from 1923-24, 1933, and 1944. Each is a page from the street directory section, listing the occupants in buildings on Fayetteville Street. At least one familiar name leaps from the page, C. E. Ligthner & Bro., Embalmers and Funeral Directors. That is likely Calvin Lightner, father of Clarence Lightner, who the proposed public safety center is named after. He succeeded his father as owner of the business, and ran same for 45 years. He was also a one-time Raleigh mayor. Other prominent advertisements on the 1923-24 page included "clothiers and furnishers," James E. Thiem who sells "everything for the office," Powell & Powell (ice, coal, building material), Bagwell & Bagwell (insurance), a druggist, and a "sanitary laundry."
