06/22/10 47 W - + 6 - 17 Raleigh to 400,000 and 45

The population of the Capital City has cleared the 400,000 plateau, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Estimates for Resident Population for Incorporated Places. The Census estimate of 405,791 places Raleigh 45th among America’s largest cities. Read entire press release.

Holy cow. We’re only 140k behind Hotlanta? We’re big time, ya’ll!

Wow… I remember when we were 116th in 1998. We qualified for the initial national round of “terrorism” grants (Nunn-Lugar Act) as one of the “120 largest cities” and felt pretty honored then. 45th is very impressive!

Some departments are certainly missing. Raleigh did not participate, for example.

“8. Miami-Dade County, FL – 1,713,875 – 56 – 4”
Some of the listings are misleading, such as Miami, city of has 4 ladder companies and 10 engine companies and Miami-Dade has 24 ladders and 32 engines.
stretch - 06/23/10 - 08:36

Some of the Miami Dade Fire Rescue engine’s are running as quints. They run either Pierce or Rosenbauer 55’-75’ sticks. MDFR runs a single midmount aerial, 1 tended platform, and couple of rearmounts. A complete listing of thier apparatus and stations can be found at http://www.miamidade.gov/mdfr
Swiman - 06/23/10 - 11:49

Boston FYI: had 56 engines and 34 ladders, before the early 80’s property tax proposition, called PROP 2 1/2,
which limited city budget growth to 2 1/2 % per year and Boston had to close a bunch of houses. Not sure how many have been reopened. This was a huge problem for the entire Commonwealth of Taxachusetts.
