06/24/12 411 W - + 8 - 3 Morning Reading - June 24, 2012

Good morning Raleigh. Here's some stuff that's caught my attention or the last week or so. Recapping here both for your enjoyment and to get my brain working on a Sunday morning, between breakfast and the first round of computer work at the man cave.

There was an alternative to the area code overlay scheme they went with. There’s no reason the entire swath of central and eastern North Carolina needed to maintain the same area code. Since most people were accustomed to only dialing six digits they could have just changed the area code for say Raleigh to a new one, or maybe Durham, or Goldboro instead. So far as anyone was concerned their number would have stayed the same in normal usage. Then requiring dialing a 1 before dialing one of the new area codes would make the misdialing a non issue, because 1-911 does not get you an overburdened emergency operator.
