10/08/12 78 W, 3 I - + 4 - 4 Smithfield Opens Second Fire Station

That is, a temporary Station 2. The Market Street bridge at the Neuse River on the west side side of downtown, so the Smithfield Fire Department has relocated Engine 2 and Engine 3 to a temporary location on Highway 70 Business West to cover that side of town. Don't know (yet) the exact street address. And how about that industrial-looking apparatus building! Former tobacco warehouse? See more photos from Lee Wilson.

The tobacco warehouses are on the east side of town and they are much bigger buildings. There are several along US301 in town. This was an industrial/commercial site, but I can’t remember what it was exactly. JoCo EMS also relocated an ambulance to the west side of the river, but it is located at Wilson’s Mills VFD #2, on Cleveland Road, call sign EMS12. EMS91 and EMS92 remain in downtown Smithfield.

Definitely not a tobacco warehouse. Mike you need a return visit to Wilson for some BBQ and a quick tour of downtown (yes a couple are a few blocks off main) and the 301 corridor for tobacco warehouses. They have torn several down in Wilson with much of the heavy timber being reclaimed (detectable by the remaining concrete pads often the size of a small city block). Many are in a poor state of decay but often undetectable from the exterior due to sizes. A few have had partial roof collapses. As for BBQ you know you can’t go wrong at Parker’s but Bill Ellis’ buffet is tough to beat with both chopped and pull your own from the pig.

This was the former shop for Wallace Welders (no kin to myself). There were several welding stations located throughout the building that is housing our engines. The welding shop in front is still in operation, just at a very low capacity.
