Going back in time, here's Fuquay Springs old Engine 1, also photographed this week. The 1945 Mack Type 45 pumper, 800/250, is stored in a building behind Station 1. See more photos. What other engines from that decade are still around in Wake County? Exactly two: Apex's 1940 Ford/Hunter and Zebulon's 1945 Mack Type 45.

Don’t know about others in Wake, but in Johnston, Wilson’s Mills not long ago restored their original 1947 Mack. They did not buy it new (they got it in the 70s) but it was their first out for several years, until they bought a 1981 Ford/Atlas, which was featured in national advertising for Atlas at the time. It was the first canaopy cab pumper that Atlas made. They still have it.
