Here's another memory of older Raleigh. Who remembers this structure? Tell about it. The picture appears courtesy of the Elizabeth Reid Murray Collection at Olivia Raney Local History library. More about that collection still later.

Correct, that's one of the old gas tanks on Cabarrus. Here's a Sanborn map image from 1950. Click to enlarge:

This looks like the old NC public gas tower off cabbarus street near where the amtrak station is now located

That is what it is all right. When I first moved to NC I worked for an HVAC contractor. There was a business just west of there and I had to pick up supplies from. Never felt comfortable parking next to that rusty tank.

You see them all over the place in England. Now I’ve seen a photo of one, I realise that you don’t get them in the US (at least, not very often)
