07/17/10 463 W - + 6 - 9 The First First Responder Calls

On April 1, 1980, the Raleigh Fire Department First Responder program expanded city-wide. The program was started as a trial at Station 3 earlier in the year. Some 270 firefighters had been trained and licensed as Emergency Medical Technicians. (Nearly but not all line personnel, which numbered ~299.) The calls numbered 19 for that first week:

Prior to April 1, 1980, the call classification "first responder" was recorded for some calls, perhaps retroactively. Such as Engine 5 at a car wreck on March 28. Also prior to April 1, the classification "service" was recorded for car accidents, calls assisting EMS, and assisting invalids. There were 14 such calls recorded in the first week of March 1980:
