While we're riding the rescue train, here are some good oldies showing the 1966 Chevy and 1974 and 1975 Chevy/Murphy rescue trucks in their day. Plus one accident photo for good measure. Sources vary for these photos. Dates range from the early 1970s to the early 1990s. Most or all have been seen before. Made 'em a little larger than usual as well, so details can be enjoyed. (The Station 5 photo is even a little larger.) Click once or twice to enlarge:

Unbelievable to me that we are still running two members on a rescue company, goes all the way back to these olden’ days.

Mike, have you considered recreating the old photo above taken at St 5? Would be interesting to compare and contrast the two, similar to the one done on Fayetteville St with St 1 apparatus. Although I’m sure it would require quite an undertaking, not too mention lots of coordination.

@Silver: We are actually fortunate to even have rescue companies as they do not benefit the city as far as ISO points and are considered by the city council as a revenue burden. The chiefs over the years actually fought to keep them and were totally shocked when their request for a third got approved.

#2, 3, and 4 look to be shots from part of a PSA by WRAL for the new call boxes when they first went into service. Or it may have been for the ‘new’ unified emergency number, 829-1911.

I’m with you RR, but I hope that when apparatus replacement comes around in the future, they consider spec’ing the new rescue apparatus to include a ground ladder compliment and the other required equipment to at least get credit as a “service truck”. Still call them a “rescue”, just gotta play the political game and show some benefit to the city. Maybe then, we can get a full crew for at least two of them.
