02/18/11 107 W - + 4 - 5 Falls/Wake Forest Merger Again on the Table

The Wake Forest Gazette this week reports on the status of the merger of the Falls Fire Department with the Wake Forest Fire Department. Discussions are still underway between the two departments, reports the Gazette, and they are developing a timeline to see if the merger can be made to happen. Factors include the county's desire to close the Falls fire station, the need for that territory to be covered in the event of station closure, and the absence of hydrants in areas of the Falls fire district. Read the story. Or see the earlier Gazette story on same.

their are benefits such as the former falls district would have a ladder truck available to respond quicker if needed. Wake forest would have apparatus for a fourth station should they demolish falls station for widening of falls of neuse rd. downside would be that some areas of falls district might have longer response times due to Raleigh, Wake Forest, Stony hill, and Bay leaf having new territory to cover.

Falls FD is going to eventually cease to exist anyway…whether they merge with WF or get overtaken by Raleigh.

The benefit of a ladder being able to respond more quickly is a mute point. Falls can have it added to the run card now and it will get enroute just as soon as a Falls eng or even quicker if they don’t have a duty crew

I think you mean a moot point.

And if anyone actually cared to look. Falls is and has been running their wheels off for the last year. Both district and mutual aid. Closing the station makes little sense to me when they are as busy as they are.

the “county” does not count ANY calls that are mutual aid or auto aid in your run totals when dealing with closing a station… and that’s a fact.

@Just my 2 cents: what exactly is your definition of “running their wheels off”?
JK - 02/22/11 - 21:35

being a member of another dept that is NOT on the closure list and had FEWER calls than Falls did. They have run numbers of 3 calls per day on AVERAGE. Last Friday they ran 11 calls. A first in house fire and 2 pin in 10-50’s a few days before that. that has been the trend now for more than 8 months. So while not a Raleigh Station 1 or 3 in volume. They numbers are significantly more substantial than anyone on the closing committee wants to give them credit for.
Just my 2 cents - 02/24/11 - 14:58

@2cent: The problem with Falls is all the calls have been with the city or mutual aid as previously stated. If you look at their runs in the little territory they have you’ll find they run about 20 calls a year.
