06/19/11 201 W, 3 I - + 3 - 4 Bridges of Falls of Neuse

One of the most exciting roadway projects in a while is near completion on Falls of Neuse Road in very north Raleigh. Work is finishing on a four-lane, two-span bridge over the Neuse River and which will connect Falls of Neuse Road with New Falls of Neuse Road. The bridge and road connection will also allow closure of the current bridge below Falls Lake Dam. That one was built in 1938 and is at the end of it's life, um, span. (The bridge predates the dam and lake by decades. Those were completed in 1981.) Believe the plans are to replace the older bridge as well. Or maybe also.

Pictures of both bridges are below. There's quite a bit of bike traffic under the new one, which has what looks like the makings of a greenway passing under the thing. As for the excitement factor, once the bridge and roadways open, Engine 25 coming south and Engine 22 / Ladder 5 going north will have considerably faster run times. Ditto for the Falls Fire Department. Looks like a solid mile is shaved going into Wakefield the new way, versus via Falls of Neuse Road to Wakefield Pines Drive. Click to enlarge:

Too bad Falls won’t be running with 25 after July 1st…......

Why not?
Why - 06/20/11 - 11:29

City of Raleigh decided not to renew the contract for Wakefield, 25 will be alone up there. Falls will still go to the county side but none of the city north of the river

Seriously? That’s pretty crazy because even with the new bridge help for 25 is still a loooooong ways away. Falls could be 2nd (and in many cases still 1st due) all day long to areas over there. Sad that monetary decisions (assuming that’s why they chose to do it) overpower morals and doing what is right. Heck I bet they could have told Falls that they would pay them half what they currently are and Falls would still make the runs to help.

From someone who has seen the budget I can tell you that Raleigh was getting an incredibly good deal working with Falls. The contract, had it been renewed, was going to cost the city less that $20,000. I wish that they would realize that they need to keep the county units around instead of trying to isolate them. 25 is a station that is out of service often for training (seeing as they are a USAR station) and the next closest station is 22 which is a heck of a long ways away.

so now if I want to get to Hwy 98 going out Falls of Neuse, I’ll have to go through Wakefield, and then either back to the North section of Falls of Neuse, or to Capital Blvd & then 98??
