11/20/06 102 W - + 10 - 17 Northern Wake Fire Department?

Speaking of insurance districts and station closings, will we ever see a Northern Wake Fire Department? Say, consolidating two or more of the northern departments (Bay Leaf, Durham Highway, Falls, Stony Hill)? Though a tempting speculation, there's a difference. When Yrac and Fairgrounds merged to form Western Wake, those original names were not community names. Same for Eastern Wake, which was the Knightdale Fire Department with municipal coverage subtracted. Bay Leaf, Falls, and Stony Hall are community names, and thus the corresponding department might be reluctant to rename themselves. There was a Northern Wake Rescue years ago, however.

Instead of merging fire depts and changing names, I would like to see Wake County take over all of the county departments, kinda like New Hanover County. A down side to that would be that the paid guys could be assigned any where in Wake County at any time. An upside would be county benefits and job security.

Interestingly and not coincidentally, Bay Leaf was created as an offshoot of Stony Hill. A couple years, Durham Highway was seeded with members of Bay Leaf.

I agree with a paid guy. The county should run all fire protection ion unincorporated areas, areas that are surounded by municipal services should be contracted with that municipality

I too, agree with “paid guy”. See P.G. County, MD…..

Northern Wake Rescue was actually a development of the Wake Forest Rescue Squad. Some time after they established a station in Rolesville, it became Northern Wake. Not sure of the timeline, though.
