05/30/12 136 W, 2 I - + 8 - 1 Raleigh's Fire Alarm Bell Will Hold Place of Honor at Centennial Celebration on June 16

Press release. A centerpiece of the Raleigh Fire Department’s 100th anniversary celebration was middle-aged the day the department was established. In 1912, the city established its first paid, professional fire department. By that time, Raleigh’s fire alarm bell had been atop City Hall for 42 years. These days, except for very special occasions, the 1,000-pound, solid bronze bell rests in its place of honor surrounded by a specially built curved wall in the Raleigh Fire Museum. But the beautiful old bell will be at center stage on Saturday, June 16, when the Raleigh Fire Department celebrates this century of exemplary service with a downtown party.
