07/15/12 211 W - + 5 - 1 Fire Departments Celebrating Anniversaries This Year

The North Carolina State Fireman's Association is compiling a list of North Carolina fire departments celebrating anniversaries this year. They've posted the below list to the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo web site. Congratulations to all!

There are some apples to oranges, however. Some are the anniversaries of career departments, such as Raleigh and Charlotte. When was Raleigh's volunteer fire department formed? That was 160 years ago, when the "modern" volunteer department was established in December 1852.

You can get even more granular, citing the first fire companies. New Bern in/around 1773, Salem in 1785, Fayetteville and Washington in 1791, Raleigh in 1819, Charlotte in 1845, Wilmington in 1846, etc. See these presentation slides for some of that context. Those pesky historians, always adding more details!

The Red Oak Community Rural Fire Department, Inc.(Pitt County) is having their 50th anniversary celebration Saturday July 21st, 2012 at the fire station located at 925 West Star St. Greenville, NC 27834. This event is being held in conjunction with a blood drive and fundraiser to assist the family of FF Ray Brooks with expenses from his recent 2nd liver transplant.

Durham Fire Department – 140 years
WATSON - 07/15/12 - 13:12

Durham was incorporated in 1869. The first fire company was formed in 1876. The town’s unorganized fire companies came under a unified leadership in 1882, cites a written history that appeared in a DFD commemorative book. To my historical and sometimes hysterical mind, that’s a milestone you can label as “volunteer fire department created.”

@ Alex: I visited durhamfire.net and read under the history section that the first fire companies were formed in 1872.

And thus exemplifies a good question with regard to fire department anniversaries. Is a fire department created when…

- The first fire equipment is purchased for citizen use?

- The first group of citizens organizes into a fire company, with said equipment?

- When the first fire companies are organized under a unified leadership or infrastructure?

- When the fire department in name is chartered?

- When the fire department in name is incorporated?

- When the fire department is organized with career members?

I would say when a group of citizens organize into a fire company with a name ie Durham FD or whatever hose company.

Clayton Area EMS (formerly Clayton Area Rescue) reached 50 years of service before being absorbed into Johnston County EMS. Smithfield EMS, which was formerly the Smithfield Rescue Squad, and before that Johnston County Civil Defense Rescue Service, reached 55 years of continuous service before being absorbed into Johnston County EMS, having started in 1957. Four Oaks EMS started as Four Oaks Rescue Squad in 1969 (43 years).

Next month will mark 36 years for Wake County EMS. Cary Area EMS started in 1971 (41 years) as the Cary Area Rescue Squad and Apex EMS also started in 1971 (41 years) as the Apex Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Raleigh-Durham Airport, although maintaining an emergency response capability since the late 40s-early 50s (not sure of the exact year), started their full time, around-the-clock fire station staffed CFR capability in 1979 (33 years). Prior to that the station was not staffed 24/7, rather there was a fire station crew from 0700 to around 2330 (or whenever the last commercial flight came in).
