April 25, 2015
Both Lee Wilson and Mike Legeros were further honored this month by the North Carolina Office of the Governor. Last week they both received (via postal mail, by way of the Wake County communication's office) the Governor's Award for Volunteer Service in the individual category. Notes the accompanying letter (signing by The Gov!), "since 1979, this prestigious award has been bestowed upon citizens who exhibit the tradition of volunteerism that is at the heartof community service in our state." Congratulations to both! Click to enlarge:

Raleigh and Wake County fire photographers Mike Legeros and Lee Wilson were honored today by the Wake County Board of Commissioners. They were among ten people recognized for their tireless service to the citizens of Wake County. They received the County Government Volunteer of the Year Award, in a ceremony during the board's regular scheduled meeting. A reception was held before the event.

Lee Wilson and Mike Legeros are veteran fire photographers, with twenty-plus and ten-plus years of experience, respectively.1 They've comprised an official Wake County EMS photo since 2006, though their work has ranged far and wide.

Says Wake County EMS Chief of Community Outreach Jeff Hammerstein via this Facebook posting, "They've unselfishly contributed thousands of hours and tens of thousands of pictures of local emergency responders and scenes from a vast list of departments and disciplines." He adds, "Their invaluable work has been used in countless classes, brochures, social and traditional media, critiques and reviews."

Visit the web site www.legeros.com/firepics to see examples of their work. Or read the Wake County press release about the award winners.

1Who are these guys and what's their background? Lee Wilson was once a Raleigh/Wake telecommunicator (little known fact), and has been an official Raleigh Fire Department photographer for decades. How many major fires and incidents has attended? Too many to list! He's also well-known outside Wake County, and is a friend to firefighters and departments around the state. Lee is also a seasoned apparatus photographer. Browse the albums and archives of his Flickr site for examples.

Mike Legeros was a city firefighter for a few years and also (briefly) a city/county telecommunicator. He's been working in the software industry for the last twenty-plus years. He's the Raleigh Fire Department's offical historian, and a fire service historian in general. He has a couple books under his belt. Plus web sites galore including some blog. He's also involved with the Raleigh Fire Museum. They're open this Saturday and he'll be there. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Congratulations to both Mike and Lee. The recognition is well deserved!
